Safety of Allergy Testing and Treatment in Patients
Taking Beta Blocker Medication.

2003-2008 Currently Enrolling

  • Details: Safety of Allergy Testing and Treatment in Patients taking Beta Blocker Medication
  • Sponsored by: American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy.

Study is enrolling patients who are skin tested and/or are taking allergy shot immunotherapy and who are also taking oral or ophthalmic Beta Blocker medication. These are patients who must take Beta Blockers to treat important heart or eye problems, and also have significant allergy symptoms. There is no prior scientific study to show how well these patients respond to allergy immunotherapy shots, and the risks of treating these patients may be increased because of the Beta Blocker. Prior reports have only been of a small number of patients, and have not been controlled, scientific studies. Many physicians believe that such patients do well, and do not have an unusually high risk for either testing or treatment. This is the first multi-center, multi-year studyto try to discover the facts.

Allergic volunteers whose symptoms are not adequately controlled by medications or environmental protection steps are needed. Study participants will be closely monitored during allergy testing and / or immunotherapy. Only patients who must take Beta Block medications, and for which there is no good substitute treatment, will participate. Details can be obtained from the Allergy Department Nursing staff.
